Abigail Spanberger Makes a Landmark as First Female State Leader

Over 250 years, Virginia has had 74 governors, each one of them men. On Tuesday, Abigail Spanberger broke this longstanding tradition by securing the position as the state's inaugural woman leader in Virginia's annals.

A Campaign Focused On Economic Issues and Targeted Criticism

Ex- US congresswoman and CIA operative succeeded with a campaign that focused on everyday expenses and strategically targeted the former president's agenda as opposed to the president himself.

Beginnings and Academic Journey

Born in a New Jersey town on August 7, 1979, she moved to a Virginia community at age 13. Her dad was an military serviceman who subsequently pursued a career in police work; her mother was a nurse and community helper.

She attended the UVA, obtaining a degree in French studies. After graduating, she had a short stint as a classroom instructor before embarking on a government work.

“I was raised believing that I wanted to walk the same path as my dad and I did,” Spanberger informed attendees at a event in Norfolk, Virginia last Saturday.

Government Roles

At the federal agency, she handled involving drugs, abusers and money launderers. She executed search and arrest warrants, often being the only woman on the operation squad. She then joined the CIA and specialized in national security, serving undercover and internationally.

Family Decision

In 2014, she and her husband Adam, an engineer, reached a career crossroads. Living on the Pacific coast, they were considering another overseas assignment. They took out a globe and asked their oldest child, then in elementary school, where they should go. the commonwealth, she replied, because “family and friends reside in Virginia”.

Spanberger recalled at her rally: “And so we decided to pivot from a federal career, to service to community because she was right. All our relatives are in Virginia.”

Political Beginnings

Back in Virginia, she volunteered with an advocacy organization, which addresses gun violence, and started a youth group. In that period, she chose to campaign for the House, which others told her was a “impossible task” because the party hadn't had secured the seventh district in half a century.

“But I witnessed what Donald Trump was doing with his authority and how he was creating conflict. And I saw my representative consistently vote to repeal the Affordable Care Act. And I felt I had to take action. So spoiler: I won.”

Bipartisan Reputation

In the capital, she rapidly became associated with the centrist group, a alliance of centrist and fiscally moderate lawmakers. She prioritized lower-profile issues: expanding broadband to rural areas, fighting drug trafficking and support for former troops.

She quickly established a reputation for working with opposing parties and was frequently recognized as the most cooperative representative of the Virginia delegation. She was vocal about political rhetoric that she felt alienated moderate voters, cautioning her party against ideological slogans that could be weaponised in contested districts.

The "Mod Squad"

Along with Representatives a former CIA analyst and Mikie Sherrill, she was dubbed a member of the “mod squad” in contrast to the progressive “group” of AOC.

State Leadership Bid

In that autumn, she declared she would leave Congress for a another term and would instead run for governor in the next election.

Her campaign focused on themes of public service, support for schools and infrastructure and protection of democratic institutions. Her intelligence experience gave her credibility on national security issues and she described public service as a vocation instead of a job.

Election Victory

This enabled her to withstand Republican opponent Winsome Earle-Sears’s attacks on cultural issues, notably the claim that she is an radical on individual freedoms and health care for transgender people.

The governor-elect, who consistently argued that individual districts should determine whether trans youth can compete in school athletics, cast her rival as the contender more misaligned with the middle of the commonwealth's citizens.
