An Compassion of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Person I Only Just Encountered Helped Me Secure the Position That Transformed My Existence

In the late 1980s, I was embarking on a low-cost journey to the European continent with a companion. Because my friend was exploring pursuing a master’s degree in New York, we had arranged a 14-day stopover there before heading to London.

We got to the graduate housing, a sizeable 10-storey building on the Upper West Side named International House. After dropping our bags, we went directly to the cafeteria, where we got some food, found a table, and engaged in conversation with other diners.

Sitting next to me was an individual of Iraqi origin studying engineering at Columbia University. He inquired what I did, and I explained that I had recently completed my studies with a scientific background and had been performing experiments involving microscopic analysis.

He noted that there was an research lab at Columbia University – close to the engineering faculty, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I consider applying for a job with them. I dismissed the idea, saying that I was about to fly to Europe and, even more importantly, I lacked a US visa.

The next day I ventured out, returning to the canteen that evening. The engineering student approached me and informed me that he had arranged an interview for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Given that he had gone to the trouble, I went to the meeting – but straight off told my prospective employer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was probably wasting her time.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a place where anything feels possible – she declared: “We can make that happen. What's your start date?” I missed my plane to London.

I held that position for a trio of years. One of the benefits was that I got free tuition at Columbia, and I took advantage to finish a postgrad program in international relations.

I lost touch with him and I can't recall his identity, but his remarkable generosity altered my destiny in numerous aspects. I didn't possess the confidence or self-belief to approach someone at an elite institution and seek a position. And, I had always wanted to pursue education overseas, but lacked the financial means without that free tuition.

Critically, that job in New York paved the way for a role in Europe where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I currently share four wonderful sons and daughters. It was a total sliding doors moment. That kind stranger redirected my path in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
