The National Football League has levied a hefty $250,000 fine on Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for what he describes as an “unintentional” offensive hand signal made toward attendees during a Sunday’s game at the Jets’ stadium.

Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.

“That was regrettable. That was kind of an exchange with our fans seated near me,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a large group of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, our fans. The whole venue was filled with excitement for the Cowboys.”

He further clarified that the signal was completely unintentional, happening amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I just showed the incorrect digit,” he noted. “The action was accidentally done. This is sincere. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. However, it got resolved pretty quick.”

Historical Precedent for Owner Penalties

This incident isn’t the initial instance an NFL owner has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Previous examples involve:

• Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at spectators in January 2024.
• Former Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.

Jones, who is recognized for his media savvy, reportedly has an approximate wealth of $16 billion, so the penalty easily payable for the billionaire owner.
