No professional sports organization promotes equal footing like the NFL: it defines their identity. But through 10 weeks in this campaign, this is not a competition featuring uniform distribution among elite teams, poor performers, and average squads. Instead, it's a scenario where the bulk of franchises appear to be fine.

Clear Picture in NFC

In the NFC, at least, the picture becomes more distinct. Los Angeles and Seattle (both standing at seven wins, two losses) seem like the most balanced franchises across the league, and delivered blowout wins in their weekend matchups. The 6-2 Eagles even with their challenges continue to possess one of the most talented rosters throughout football, comparable to the Packers (five wins, two losses, one tie). Detroit as well (6-3 standing), despite their uneven performances on offense and defense while managing tension on their coaching staff, have proven they can hammer strong franchises. For all five, one can readily envision a championship trajectory.

Muddled AFC Picture

Turning to the American Football Conference, the playoff picture remains completely chaotic. The current division frontrunners through ten weeks: Indianapolis, New England, Denver (all at 8-2) along with Pittsburgh (5-4 record). Consider that carefully. Kansas City isn't there. Not the Bills. Neither Ravens nor Bengals. Historically strong franchises, backed by elite NFL signal-callers, possess either glaring roster weaknesses or are dealing with health issues.

From certain perspectives, this is exactly what the league wants. Yet observing the current division frontrunners in the AFC remains somewhat odd. Areas of each team pass the championship smell test, though not comprehensively. Indianapolis Colts

Today they appear youthful, quick and confident. Still, it’s hard to ignore how soft the Patriots’ schedule has been. They have faced the easiest slate across the NFL, yet vulnerabilities remain. Their quarterback has taken sacks thirty-five times – ranking second league-wide – and some of the shots he endured during the game proved brutal. As the season progresses, that punishment compounds.

Broncos Situation

The Broncos are 8–2 as well, and it still feels as if they’re holding their breath. Bo Nix has shown inconsistency, with the attack struggling, with the defense doing the majority of the work. Lacking competent QB performance, the Broncos aren’t scaring any playoff team. Los Angeles remains nearby in the Western division at 7-2, but the injuries along their offensive line will make it tough for extended playoff success.

Steelers Examination

And then there’s Pittsburgh, surprisingly atop their division even after suffering 25-10 by the Chargers on Sunday night. They've been outscored overall, their defense too often disappears, and Aaron Rodgers’ limitations given his veteran status regularly manifest. At 5-4, they're barely clinging, yet Baltimore, with their QB returning to health and facing easier opponents, are on a three-game win streak. This development isn't entirely shocking that Baltimore has closed to within one game of Pittsburgh, but how rapidly this occurred highlights deficiencies within Pittsburgh’s inconsistencies. Considering the Ravens opened the season 1-5 and currently seem capable of division victory reveals much about the entire AFC.

Historical Favorites

Baltimore constitutes part among three elite teams – together with Bills and Chiefs – powered by their MVP quarterbacks, who would still strike the highest anxiety for opponents if they qualified. They represent undesirable playoff matchups, but the Chiefs and Bills cannot get out of their own way.

Bills Struggles
