A defense official has confirmed that the Ministry of Defence is actively examining the possible threats associated with Chinese cars, and staff have been advised to refrain from discussing classified matters in any vehicles.
Security Guidance for MoD Staff
In a recent interview on a radio station, a defence minister addressed reports that Ministry of Defence officials have been told not to discuss secret information while riding in Chinese vehicles.
He explained that the MoD is “investigating” cars from China within its vehicle pools, but emphasised that safety is a concern in all modern vehicles.
We have a fleet of tens of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones account for a tiny fraction.
However whether you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our people is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their vehicle, not to have conversations at a secret classification in any vehicle, because of the growing threats of eavesdropping that are present in all vehicle, to restrict those secret talks in protected areas. This is a wise and sensible thing for anyone concerned about safety.
After it was suggested that it would be wise for the ministry to stop using every Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”
Broader Defence Background
This revelation comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese buses, which could enable China to switch off buses and cause chaos to public transit.
Furthermore, a Russian spy ship has been directing laser beams at RAF aircrew, labeled a “extremely risky” act by government representatives.
This wider security situation highlights the significance of robust protocols and caution in all aspects of government operations, including transport usage to discussions habits.
