Monte Cook and Monte Cook Will Lead Classes at Dungeon Master Academy

Beginning in 2018, a specialized event organizer has been organizing deeply engaging experiences where professional dungeon masters manage Dungeons & Dragons games in historic castles in the UK and at an American castle venue. These all-inclusive trips are widely appreciated among long-time dungeon masters who infrequently find the opportunity to actually play themselves, and they often ask for tips from the pros on topics ranging from improvisation and crafting riddles to handling difficult situations at the table.

In response, the planners began designing a organized method to address these questions, which led to the founding of the Dungeon Master Academy. The inaugural event is planned for the start of 2026 at a university in Atlanta.

“There are numerous digital guides on virtually any subject and learn quite a lot, but the philosophy was that nothing truly replaces an in-person experience alongside other dungeon masters, where there’s live engagement with faculty instructors and other game masters often in the same boat and aim to improve their skills,” stated the dean of Dungeon Master University.

Course Offerings and Pricing Tiers

Dungeon Masters can opt for tiers ranging from just under $1,000 to $2,500, according to the level of access they desire with the experts. The starting package includes selection from four classes:

  • Core Techniques: Teaches the essentials of managing a session.
  • Long-Term Game Planning: Is dedicated to designing extended campaigns.
  • Worldbuilding: Highlights the art of setting design.
  • Career Building: Designed for dungeon masters who seek to understand more about the gaming industry.

All workshops includes multiple sessions of classwork spread over 48 hours.

“The courses are structured so that you walk away with immediate practical outcomes, probably greater confidence, and a lot of usable tools,” Carl noted. “These aren't simple talks and they go beyond recorded content. These classes that you can join, absorb insights from, and then go right back home the following week and implement in your local game.”

Expert Instructors

Most classes are led by two professors. Worldbuilding is guided by Monte Cook and Keith Baker, together instructing the art of worldbuilding.

Industry advancement presents several experts, such as an author on gaming puzzles, an entertainment professional, and an early professional game master. The expanded teaching staff is meant to deliver focused advice to students with specific goals.

“Some of them plan to create their own D&D actual play and present their narratives with the world, others plan to produce and create new material,” Carl said. “Several only seek to ask, How do I get to be a DM at an event like an immersive experience? What are the skills that I need? Can anyone do it?

Higher Tiers

A $1,500 gold tier provides access to a opening gathering, a starter kit, and a half-hour consultation appointment with an instructor. This represents the debut of the program, though the company has previously run similar events during breaks between adventures at their castle events.

“It would be possible to organize an entire weekend just on office hours for expert DMs,” Carl observed. “It's unclear if that’s the optimal application of everybody’s time – I believe the formal instruction and the lab work is extremely important – but I suspect it’s going to be among the most sought-after parts of the program.”

The twenty-five hundred dollar premium option provides an 60-minute private session and the chance to lead a session for several participants plus one of the faculty members, who will then offer feedback and coaching.

“The aim is for the teacher to review any element is concerned with: I have difficulty with improv or I get blocked in specific fight encounters. Can I run a situation for you and receive input on where I excel and need improvement?” Carl said. “Or maybe they want to receive input and advice on a specific world that they’ve been building.”

Coming Developments

Responses from the debut workshop will help guide subsequent DMU events. Carl suggested that likely modifications could include adding more office hours, making it longer to a longer period, or trying out different seminar structures.

“I hope that we do this frequently,” Carl expressed. “I truly hope to see multiple Dungeon Master Universities in a calendar year, in multiple places, and in various nations. The feedback has been really terrific. We’re very happy with the results so far and I believe it would be wonderful to be able to organize these in conjunction with major events.”
