🔗 Share this article The Battle Royale's Specialized Movement Mechanics Are Going Mainstream During This Update The game developers have a special treat prepared for the popular battle royale players, perfectly timed for the holidays. Fans of this game's super-slick traversal can rejoice to discover that a new movement mechanic is being implemented when Season 27: Amped goes live on November 4th. Introducing Mantle Boosting Dubbed "Momentum Boosting" by Respawn, this feature provides gamers a burst of forward momentum when climbing over ledges and walls. As explained lead battle royale designer the design lead, this technique was previously been a feature of the game for some time, often called as "mantle jumping." But it's no easy feat for the average player, and typically employed by competitive players in Ranked Mode or esports competitions. This season, Respawn is making it easier for everyone to execute these advanced movement boosts. "This technique existed in the game for a while, but executing it requires skill to perform and gamers would never know it's possible without outside knowledge," the designer explains. "We're adding a visual cue so users can clearly identify when and how to trigger the fast-paced traversal skill, opening up the mechanic and introducing fresh strategies to compete for a much wider base." The Reasoning Behind Make It Accessible What's the reason for making a previously obscure movement quirk available to everyone? Lead Legend designer Josh Mohan explains developers wants gamers to feel powerful — even those who are new. "Our community performs other crazy stuff like super-glides and tap-strafes, and we examined at our competition, looked at what the community execute, and we said, 'What if we extend some of this power to more players?'" Mohan explains. "Since right now, some of these advanced [movement] mechanics are kind of janky to use — it requires to remap your keybinds and execute within one-frame windows. We proposed, 'What if we make a more official implementation?'" The Amped Update Emphasis on Mobility Mobility is largely the name of the game in Season 27, with Legends the gravity mage, Rampart, and the aerial combatant receiving buffs to maintain them mobile. The cooldown period on Horizon's Gravity Lift is shorter, and this skill will propel users into the air faster than before. Her defensive walls feature a roof and the ability to grant movement bonuses to those nearby. However the spotlight is on the high-flying this Legend who's getting significant improvements this season, with multiple tweaks applied to enhance her as more potent, quicker, and deadlier. "In my opinion there's quite a consensus that her moment is here," states character developer Ian Holstead. "Certainly she was top-tier in the past, but due to the addition of other characters, movement[-based] passives, and redeployment tools, it felt like she fell behind in today's the game. This presented a really great opportunity for us to reexamine multiple elements [of her kit] and essentially bring her back to her glory days." Enhancements to the Aerial Legend To restore her competitive status in the game's meta, Holstead says Respawn assessed each of her abilities and introduced some powerful modifications. Her jetpack have been upgraded, increasing her speed while airborne, and the jets themselves now recharge much quicker, allowing her to spend more time in the air. She can no longer be harmed from her own Missile Swarm, which was enhanced to tag opponents who take damage from it. Her squad redeploy skill — which launches her entire squad into the air for repositioning or retreat — now takes reduced delay to activate. She's also getting recently added perk choices that users can select to conserve resources, expand the spread of her rockets, or accelerate her ultimate activation. "Her jet pack now delivers on that jet-fighter fantasy," Holstead says. Olympus Improvements Additionally, the only floating arena, Olympus, receives a mobility-focused overhaul, with an extensive redesign that opens up choke points and makes claiming the high ground more manageable. Respawn says Apex Legends Season 27 is all about providing gamers the resources they need to keep up with matches. "Really, we examined Apex's fundamental nature as a fast-paced FPS," says principal designer Josh Mohan. The battle royale the Amped season releases November 4th at the specified times.
