The Manager Enzo Maresca Labels Lead-Up Period as The 'Worst 48 Hours' with the Blues

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca stated that the build-up to the weekend's victory against Everton constituted "the toughest 48 hours" of his tenure at Stamford Bridge.

The 44-year-old offered a rather mysterious message in his post-match interview even after securing a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge courtesy of finishes from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.

Those points propelled Chelsea once again into the English top flight's top four, potentially improving the atmosphere following a defeat to Atalanta in the Champions League that had extended the side's drought without a win to consecutive fixtures.

Yet, when questioned about Gusto's assist and general display, Maresca surprisingly divulged his displeasure over the preceding two days within the club.

"The way the squad want to improve has been excellent and this is the explanation why I applaud them - because with numerous problems, they are excelling after a difficult week," he said.

"Since I joined the club, the past 48 hours have been the worst because many people failed to back us."

Pressed on his meaning, the former Leicester City boss elaborated: "Most difficult 48 hours since I joined the club because people didn't support me and the team."

When asked if he was referring to people within at Chelsea, he replied: "In general. Overall," before clarifying when asked if it was directed towards supporters or the media: "I love the fans and we are very happy with the fans."

Injury and Disciplinary Crisis

Maresca also drew attention to Chelsea's persistent fitness and disciplinary problems, noting they had been missing key forward Cole Palmer for a large portion of the season, as well as losing linchpin Moises Caicedo to a three-match ban and striker Liam Delap to two significant injuries.

"I truly praise the players and the squad because we have played 16 Premier League games, five of them without Moises Caicedo, 11 of them without Cole Palmer, almost all of them minus Liam Delap," he said.

"And this squad, no matter who is playing, they are doing fantastic. Today was 5 games in 12 days so certainly when you see Cole Palmer available, we have said many times that he's our best player but we play the vast majority of the season without our best player.

"We play five games in the Premier League without Moises Caicedo. This is the explanation why I'm so delighted for the players and it's something that I would like people outside to acknowledge because the effort from the players is outstanding."

Chelsea's triumph over Everton consolidated their standing in 4th place in the Premier League standings, with a Carabao Cup quarter-final tie at Cardiff and a league trip to Newcastle scheduled in the coming days.

Speculation Regarding Maresca's Comments

It was ambiguous who or what caused Maresca to label the previous 48 hours as the worst of his tenure as Chelsea head coach.

In that timeframe, the coach had traveled back with his staff and players from Bergamo, conducted a training session at the training ground, attended a pre-game press briefing where he seemed at ease, and engineered a win over an high-flying Everton side.

It was not obvious whether any specific press stories had irked him, if online discourse were a factor, or if it was something deeper from within the club at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca only sought to deny that it was an issue related to the club's fans, some of whom have not yet fully warm to him since his appointment from Leicester during July 2024.
