UN:Me: An Psychological Thriller Merging Silent Hill and Among Us Mechanics

The latest Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of fascinating upcoming titles, but one in particular has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.

"It's a distinctive experience where a girl harboring several personalities within her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Fractured Consciousness

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four distinct personas, all possessing their own anxieties and drives. These entities can take over spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.

Judging by showcased gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy medical facility, while other scenes depict the main character navigating a abandoned chapel.

An Environment of Personal Horror

"What are you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Things that seem trivial to other people can trigger something primal inside us. This game explores that idea β€” anxieties that are unique to every individual."

The core gameplay loop involves controlling the persona that emerges at a particular moment. However, these souls will change against your will as you play. While exploring, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the girl one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.

Eerie Visuals and a Fatal Choice

Initially, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The setting is populated by nurses who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the lobby have large flowers growing from their heads should be. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the physical form belongs to them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."

Once players believes a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. But, because every entity can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.

"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," a voice states. "The final entity standing could be a fake. In any case, your choices are final."

UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
