Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the ability to question certain calls made by the chair umpire, following the system already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move comes just a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can request.

Practical Application

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
