Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from captain Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in multiple conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

But, following the opener scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "weak men" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in just eleven days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his immediate place in the side, Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There's no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
